Marcus Roberts Nonet new CD, "Deep In The Shed: A Blues Suite
05-December-2012 — J-Master Music is pleased to announce the release of Marcus Roberts’ new recording, Deep in the Shed: A Blues Suite, featuring a nonet of Roberts’ close musician friends, including regular trio members Rodney Jordan (bass) and Jason Marsalis (drums). Shed was originally written and released in 1989. After completely revising and re-arranging the suite, Marcus re-recorded it (in Tallahassee, FL) for the current release on his own label, J-Master Music. Read liner notes

11-November-2012 — Today marks a happy 15th Anniversary for Dark Star Orchestra. Highlights from this past year alone include DSO's 2,000th show in Ithaca (a year ago today, 11/11/11); performing in front of 30,000 fans in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass with a recreation The Dead's 9/28/75 show (originally performed on almost the very same spot); and on Oct. 13th (the second of two nights at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore), Grateful Dead's founding bass player Phil Lesh joined DSO for the entire first set. Gonzalo Bergara Quartet co-bills with Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks
12-July-2011 — Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks will be joined by another swingin' posse, Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, at Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, CA for a night of sizzling, toe-tapping jazz on Saturday July 23, 2011. The two were last seen together when Django Reinhardt-inspired Bergara played guitar as one of the "Hot Licks" on Dan Hicks' 2004 album, Selected Shorts.
DSO's 2,000th show milestone in sight
01-July-2011 — SRO's Jeff Laramie has indicated Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) will play it's 2000th show this coming fall 2011. Since 1997, DSO has performed throughout the United States and Europe. They continue to grow their fan base by playing at larger venues for two and even three nightstands as well as performing at major music festivals including Bonnaroo, All Good Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Mountain Jam, Summer Camp, Wakarusa and 10,000 Lakes. In addition, DSO hosts its own annual July gathering, Gratefulfest, where they headline three nights and are joined by a mix of established and up and coming national touring acts.

New release from Catie Curtis out August 30, 2011
20-June-2011 — The 11th career studio release from Catie Curtis, Stretch Limousine on Fire, will be out August 30th on Compass Records. Produced by Lorne Entress, these ten new tracks were recorded and mixed by Ryan Freeland in L.A. (Ray LaMontangue, Ingrid Michaelson, The Weepies). Matthew Curry, a Grammy nominated artist/designer (best known for his work with Thievery Corporation) is illustrating the cover and designing the CD artwork and Joseph Anthony Baker (Taylor Swift) shot the photos. Extensive US touring will support. Routing includes:

17-June-2011 — Special thanks to the promoters for an outstanding Winter 2011 Tour with The Pink Floyd Experience. With their dazzling new light show and giant screen HD Video in tow, PFX featured the complete presentation of Floyd's 1977 "Animals" album, within their epic 2 hour show. The Winter 2011 tour ran seven-weeks, sold more than 38,000 tickets and grossed over $1.3 million. For Winter/Spring 2012 US tour, PFX will perform another Floyd favorite in its entirety, the 1975 release "Wish You Were Here." SRO agents are routing US East to West from February through April, 2012.
Karla Bonoff's Japan Tour rescheduled
13-June-2011 — Karla Bonoff returns to Japan for a tour with JD Souther, February 21 through 26, 2012. The tour, originally scheduled in May of 2011, was postponed due to travel warnings from Japan in the wake of its devastating earthquakes.
A Busy Year 2011 For Janis Ian
10-June-2011 — Janis Ian toured Japan all of January-February, then performed an exhausting 30 US cities in 50 days in March/April. Highlights included several performances with Tom Paxton and Natalia Zukerman under the banner "Together At Last". This summer includes an appearance at The Hudson River Clearwater Festival, and The Swannanoa Festival followed by a three-month European tour from September to November. Whew! Janis will be writing for another upcoming book and CD in the Winter and Spring. Summer 2012 dates are limited, until scheduling returns to open US touring in Fall 2012 and Spring 2013. New Cellist for Chamber Blues
10-June-2011 — Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues is pleased to announce the addition of cellist Jocelyn Butler, a gifted and vivacious young talent. The group anticipates working immediately on a new Chamber Blues recording project with her that will feature favorite special guest artists. Jocelyn replaces cellist Jill Kaeding, who after 18 years with Chamber Blues, has announced her retirement. Jill's last performance with Chamber Blues will be on July 24 at the Long Grove Music Festival.

06-June-2011 —, an award winning top five food blog with a devoted and large following of more than 1.7 million users monthly, lists Patty Larkin's song "Caffeine" within their top five songs about coffee. From her 1984 album Step Into the Light the song mentions George Howell's historic Harvard Square cafe, as well as the Coffee Connection (birthplace of the frappuccino).
Simon Shaheen's 'Oud Concerto' Has Worldly Legs
05-June-2011 — Oud Concerto, which premiered with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2008, was performed by ERT National Symphonic Orchestra June 4 at Megaron-Athens Concert Hall in Greece. Composer Simon Shaheen notes, "The concert in Athens was wonderful - the orchestra was excellent, and it was videotaped professionally for Greek TV." According to Simon, a recording of the oud concerto is due soon, as performed live in Lebanon with the Beirut Symphony earlier this year.
Annual Arab Music Retreat Announced
22-May-2011 — Presented by The Arab American Arts Institute, Simon Shaheen's 15th Annual Arabic Music Retreat will be held from August 13-20, 2011 at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Shaheen invites students, performers, and scholars of Arabic music for seven days of intensive classes, workshops, and a recital by participants and instructors. Read brochure

21-May-2011 — Congratulations to CGT, who's latest album Andromeda has won the Best Instrumental Album of 2010 at the Indie Acoustic Project. 20-May-2011 — In August, Dark Star Orchestra faces its' own Last Frontier of the Continental U.S. Yes, Dark Star Orchestra will be taking the long jump up the Klondike Coast: Anchorage, Denali, and Fairbanks, Alaska, playing Midnight Moonlight in the Land of the Midnight Sun. 10-April-2011 — In early 2011 Janis Ian returned to Japan for a much-anticipated tour there, bringing with her US singer/songwriter Natalia Zukerman. In light of recent tragic events in Japan, both artists have agreed to donate 100% proceeds from the sale of two rare mp3 downloads (two Janis Ian songs, performed live in Osaka January 22, 2011) to Citizen's Nuclear Information Center []. The CNIC is an anti-nuclear public interest organization in Japan dedicated to securing a safe, nuclear-free world. The Center was formed to provide reliable information and public education on all aspects of nuclear power, to ultimately realize this goal.

Five Years Ago Today!
31-March-2011 — On this day in 2006, Catie Curtis was named grand prize winner of the International Songwriting Competition, for her song “People Look Around”, co-written with Mark Erelli. The judges, (including Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn, Macy Gray, and Sonny Rollins) chose the winner from a field of 15,000 entries from 82 countries. The song appeared on Long Night Moon (©2006, Compass Records) an intricate work of stripped down modern folk.

DSO>Jam in the Dam VI
17-March-2011 — Dark Star Orchestra returns to Jam in the Dam VI: a multi-day, multi-room extravaganza held at the legendary Melkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands, March 14 through 16, 2012. The festival will also feature: moe., Mike Gordon, Lotus and Keller Williams. Each artist will play extended sets all three nights in one of the two concert halls, all under one roof. This marks DSO's first trip back to JITD since their back-to-back appearances in 2007 and 2008.
‘Zafir’ World Premiere
28-February-2011 — The world premiere of Simon Shaheen's original composition "Zafir," written for and performed with Imani Winds was performed by both artists on February 6 to a capacity crowd at Kasser Theater/Montclair State University. The co-bill also performs 2-April-2011 at University of Notre Dame.

Gators Learn Creative Writing
24-January-2011 — A few dozen students at the University of Florida spent an insightful day with Patty Larkin last Friday. Elizabeth Auer, Assistant Director at the Curtis Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, noted, "[Patty's] workshop with creative writing students went great...they were very engaged and came to the performance as well!" The evening performance at the Center's 200-seat SQUITIERI STUDIO THEATRE was a sell-out.
6xSix-String Kings
16-January-2011 — Inspired by their Fall 2010 Canadian tour, the California Guitar Trio (CGT) and Montreal Guitar Trio (MG3) performed for the first time in the US at the 2011 APAP Conference in New York City. Together, the group features guitar virtuosos from four countries (Japan, Canada, Belgium, and US), as they explore intricate original guitar compositions as well as new arrangements of progressive rock, world, jazz and classical (watch video). This new six-by-6-string 'phenomensemble' release a live CD in 2011 with touring to support through 2012.

12-December-2010 — Pink Floyd's concept album ANIMALS (1977) was a statement regarding the decline of society of the day. While making the album did set in motion the discord that would eventually destroy the band, the subsequent tour for this release planted the seeds for what would become The Wall. For its' 2011 Tour, THE PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE present Animals live in its entirety! Country Roads premieres at Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra 2010 Pops Series
10-October-2010 — In an encore-like fashion, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (Matthew Kraemer, conductor) will premiere their second Cover Stories for Pops show in as many years. On October 30, 2010 at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York, BPO celebrates two of America's great singer songwriters in Country Roads: The Music of John Denver & Dan Fogelberg. In September 2009, BPO premiered the Symphony Pops of Sweet Baby James: The Music of James Taylor. Daniel Hart, BPO's Executive Director, noted "this is a first class show, with singers and musicians that work very well with the orchestra... and our audience responded so strongly!"

WAA 2010 Showcase Leads to SRO Signing
05-September-2010 — Argentinean guitarist Gonzalo Bergara and his quartet, showcased their intricate swing and gypsy jazz at the 2010 Western Arts Alliance Conference in Long Beach, California. Shortly after, SRO signed them for national booking representation. President of SRO Artists, Inc. Jeff Laramie says, "Gonzalo is one of the most dynamic young guitarists we've seen in a long time." Composer and lead guitarist Bergara mixes cascades of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina and is supported by an ace clarinetist and a honed rhythm section. Bergara is fiery and focused, while the hard-swinging band takes the audience for a ride.

Kenny Edwards (1946-2010)
19-August-2010 — Last week, we asked you to join us in helping Kenny Edwards obtain an emergency med-flight back to his home in Southern California, as he was hospitalized while on tour with Karla Bonoff. The response was overwhelming, and thanks to the generosity of the music community, Kenny did get to return home to Santa Barbara. We are, however, saddened to report that yesterday Kenny lost his battle with advancing prostate cancer and passed away peacefully. Your words, thoughts, generosity, & kindness eased his transition. He was grateful for the love he was shown. For more information as it becomes available, visit Kenny will be remembered for his four decades of contributions as a musician, producer and friend.

10-Aug-2010 — Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich reviews the performance of a new jazz quartet featuring Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien at Chicago's Jazz Showcase. While the ensemble is more attuned to jazz than previous Siegel/Sabien collaborations, Reich notes, "To hear Siegel's high-pitched laments and throaty low notes answered by Sabien's pithy riffs and silken phrases was to understand the potential of this ensemble." 07-July-2010 — The 900-seat Music Pier in Ocean City, New Jersey hosted the headline concert premiere of Country Roads: The Music of John Denver & Dan Fogelberg this past Monday July 5.
